Summer Pet Wellness Care: Tips from a Vet near Westfield

Summer-Pet-Wellness-Care-Tips-from-a-Vet-near-Westfield

We may not have officially reached the first day of summer yet, but it will be here before we know it. Temperatures are already starting to soar, too, so now is a good time to remind yourself of the challenges the summer season presents for your pet. Hot weather can prove deadly for pets, and it only takes a few seconds for disaster to strike. Keep your furry friend happy and healthy with these summer pet wellness care tips from the vets near Westfield at PetVet Animal Hospital

Respect the Heat

When it comes to dealing with heat, pets have very few options. They don’t sweat like we do, and they don’t have the ability to head to an air-conditioned space when high temperatures get overwhelming. Pets -especially those who are overweight or elderly - are susceptible to heatstroke, which can be deadly. Protect your pet by never leaving them in the car on a warm day. Make sure they always have access to cool water, too.

Be careful when taking your dog for walks during the summer. Asphalt that has been baking in the sun all day can cause serious injuries to your canine companion’s paws. Always check the surface with your hand before allowing your dog to walk on it. If it’s too hot to comfortably hold your hand on for at least 10 seconds, it’s too hot for your pet to walk on.

Keep Parasites at Bay

Pets can suffer from parasite infestations at any time of year. They are more common in the summer, though. Make sure your pet is on a high-quality parasite preventative that protects them against fleas and ticks.

If you use pesticides at home, be careful. Many of the products that are deadly to insects are also toxic to companion animals. Do your homework to find safe pesticides and use products according to their instructions to avoid harming your furry family member.

Find Out if Your Pet Needs Sunscreen

Like people, some pets are prone to sunburn. This is especially true for those with pink skin and short, fine hair. Talk to a vet near Westfield to find out if your pet should be wearing sunscreen when spending time outdoors. If your pet does need sunscreen, be sure to only use products that are specially formulated for use on animals.
