Make an Evacuation Plan
You should never leave a pet behind if you have to evacuate. Doing so could be a death sentence for your companion. At the very least, you are unlikely to be reunited with them if you leave them. As an animal owner, it’s up to you to have an evacuation plan that includes your pet.
Research pet-friendly shelters and hotels in your area and along the route you’d likely follow if ordered to evacuate. Talk to relatives, friends, and co-workers, too, to see if there is anyone who could care for your pet if you needed to leave and couldn’t take them with you.
Put Together an Emergency Kit
If you don’t already have an emergency kit for your pet, now is time to make one. You don’t need anything fancy. A large backpack filled with the following pet-care essentials is perfect.
- An extra collar, harness, and leash
- Copies of your pet’s most recent medical records and license
- At least two weeks worth of any medications your pet takes
- Two weeks worth of food and water
- Carriers for small pets
- First-aid kit
- Food and water dishes
- Your veterinarian’s contact information
