Halloween Pet Safety Tips from Your Fishers Vet

Halloween-Pet-Safety-Tips-from-Your-Fishers-Vet

Halloween is almost here! This time of year is supposed to be filled with treats, laughter, and a few good-natured tricks, but it’s all too often filled with stress and heartache for pet parents. Many of the things we love most about this time of year are hazardous to our pets. From costumes that restrict movement to temping treats that are unsafe for animals, there are lots of potential dangers. At Pet Vet Animal Hospital, we don’t want to see any pets suffering from unfortunate accidents this Halloween. Keep reading to discover a few pet safety tips from your Fishers vet!

Keep Candy Out of Reach

You know that chocolate is toxic to dogs. You might not know, though, that sugar-free candies, candy corn, treats that contain raisins, and even candy apples are potentially hazardous. This Halloween, keep your treats where your pet cannot access them. And if they eat something they shouldn’t, contact the ASPCA Poison Control Center for assistance.

Choose the Right Costume

Dressing your pet up in a cute costume is one of the most fun parts of Halloween. You have to be careful, though, to ensure that your furry friend’s outfit is safe. Choose one that’s comfortable and doesn’t restrict your pet’s movement or breathing. It shouldn’t block their vision, either. And if your pet seems anxious or uncomfortable, take the costume off immediately. Never leave your pet unsupervised while dressed up in their Halloween attire.

Avoid Hazardous Decor

A carved jack-o-lantern with a candle inside is a festive Halloween decoration, but it could be dangerous for pets. A curious dog could knock the pumpkin over and start a fire, or a curious kitten could burn themself on the candle flame. Extension cords and wires are dangerous, too — especially to pets who like to chew.

Call a Vet if Things Get Scary

Few things are more frightening than seeing your pet suffering from an injury or illness. If your pet faces any problems this Halloween (or anytime!), contact us right away for the care they need. From our family to yours, we wish you a safe and happy Halloween!
